Shayba: Ukraine’s Purring Defender

In the midst of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, stories of resilience, loyalty, and unexpected companionship have emerged from the front lines. One of the most heartwarming and inspiring tales is that of Shayba (also known as Puck), a gray tabby cat who went from an abandoned kitten to a viral “combat cat” serving alongside Ukrainian soldier Oleksandr Liashuk. Together, they have brought joy, boosted morale, and raised significant funds for Ukraine’s defense.

In October 2022, just months after the invasion began, Oleksandr Liashuk — a soldier from the Odesa region in southern Ukraine — was serving on the southern front. Before the war, Liashuk had lived a peaceful life in Odesa and considered himself a pacifist. But when Russia invaded in February 2022, he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend his homeland. One day, while his platoon went to a nearby village for supplies, they spotted kittens abandoned at a store entrance. Among them was a tiny, hungry gray tabby left in a cardboard box as winter approached. The soldiers couldn’t leave him behind. They brought the kitten back to their position, where he quickly became part of the unit.Liashuk instantly bonded with the little cat, whom he named Shayba.
“He’s not just my best friend, he’s my son,” Liashuk later said.
The kitten helped solve practical problems too—like keeping mice away from their gear—but more importantly, he provided emotional support in the harsh realities of war. Shayba grew up among the troops, adapting to the sounds of artillery and the rhythm of patrols.

As Shayba matured into a confident young cat, Liashuk decided to make him an official part of the team. He crafted a miniature camouflage uniform for Shayba, complete with Ukrainian flag patches, name chevrons, and tactical details. The cat now “serves” in style: perched on Liashuk’s shoulder during patrols, riding in vehicles, and even posing seriously for photos that mirror his human companion’s focused expression.Their joint adventures quickly went viral on social media platforms like Instagram (@shaybaboy), TikTok, and X (@aliashukua).
Videos show Shayba “on duty”—scanning horizons with a vigilant stare, cuddling with soldiers during downtime, or simply being an adorable morale booster. Liashuk shares daily glimpses of their life: Shayba napping in bunkers, joining meetings, and even reportedly meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The content resonated globally. Fans from Chile to Japan fell in love with the “tactical kitten,” whose serious demeanor and fluffy charm provided a beacon of hope amid the conflict.
Support Ukraine — let Shayba’s quiet courage travel the world as a postcard that turns compassion into real help.
This isn’t just a touching tale — it’s living history, and every sacrifice behind it deserves to be remembered with dignity.
