Kherson under water: How Russia blew up the dam and caused a disaster

Kherson is a city in southern Ukraine that was liberated from Russian occupation in November 2022. But since then, Russia has been bombing the city and its surroundings, causing death and destruction to civilians and animals.

On June 6, 2023, a major dam on the Dnipro River in Ukraine was destroyed by an explosion, caused by Russian forces. The Nova Kakhovka dam, which was part of a hydroelectric power plant, collapsed and unleashed a huge surge of water that flooded nearby towns and villages, forcing thousands of people to evacuate. Many people and animals were drowned or swept away by the current. Some managed to escape, but they faced hunger, thirst and cold in the aftermath.

Streets are flooded in Kherson, Ukraine

The dam was a vital part of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant (Kakhovka HPP), which provided electricity for hundreds of thousands of people. It also regulated the water level of the Dnipro River, which is the main source of drinking water for many regions of Ukraine. The destruction of the dam threatened the water supply and the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the biggest in Europe.

The destruction of the dam has serious consequences for the region’s ecology, economy and security.

Fortunately, many volunteers and organizations stepped in to rescue and help people and animals in need. Volunteers who traveled to Kherson with boats, ropes, nets, cages, food and water. They searched for animals on rooftops, apartments, garages and floating debris, and brought them to safety.

The volunteers faced many challenges and dangers during their mission, such as strong currents, debris, mines and snipers. However, they did not give up and continued to work tirelessly to save as many lives as possible.
